Halton Hikes - footsteps for trees

With every footstep you take on the Halton Trails you are one step closer to planting a tree!  In the Footsteps for Trees book, the Halton trails are mapped and the number of steps needed to walk the trails is listed.  With each hike you take, you log your steps on their website.  As the footsteps count up a tree will be planted in your name.

"Conservation Halton established the Halton Hikes website and Footsteps for Trees hiking program to raise awareness of the great trails available in Halton and to engage the community in conservation." For more information check http://www.haltonhikes.ca/

February is a heart-warming month during these winter-cold days.  Valentine's Day and Family Day highlight the heart-filled relationships in our lives.   Hopefully these two days allow us to slow down and show our appreciation to the loved ones in our lives--appreciation we should be expressing every day.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation is watching out for the hearts of our loved ones by helping Canadians understand they may be at an increased risk for heart disease and stroke if waistlines exceed a certain size. To properly measure your waist, click on www.heartandstroke.ca/HealthyWaists & www.fmcoeur.ca/TourdeTailleSain

For measuring your romantic relationship, check out the ACE article, Exercise and Sex, by Marion Webb. The Journal of the American Medical Association published findings of the effects of adopting a healthier lifestyle and sexual function.

Active Healthy Kids has reported on 2007 Canada's Report Card on Physical Activity for Children & Youth and the grade comes in at a “D.”  Check out the specifics at www.activehealthykids.ca

Give your love ones the gift of a walk, a skate, a ski outing, an afternoon of sledding, or Pilates—a gift of health.

This exercise provides core stability, shoulder mobility and stability, hip mobility, strength for hamstrings, gluteal muscles, length for the quadriceps and hip flexors.

Exhale (rib cage deflates, abs draw in and up), keep lifting until shoulders, hips and knees are in a long diagonal line. Keep pressing gently to the circle, and reaching knees long with upper back and chest wide. Take a breath in and out.

Bridge 1

Inhale and start lowering pelvis with control from the buttocks and thighs, keep pressing to the circle. Exhale and touch the tailbone down to ground to finish.

Walking/Hiking

We continue with our weekly walks on Monday and Wednesday, rain or shine. Join us for your fitness walks through the local Oakville trails! Renew your spirit, exercise your heart and lungs and condition your whole body in the great outdoors. Group walks may include gait training, resistance training and/or Pilates depending on the day and group and are Free.

Our monthly hikes in the escarpment region of Halton are continuing. The hikes take place every third Tuesday of the month. This month we will be going on a Sustainable Living Tour, with Lunatic Adventures in the countryside of St. George.  Our guide will be David Masters who will show us how he lives an environmentally aware lifestyle.  We can also enjoy some of the lovely snow by snowshoeing around his property.

“In 2002 David Masters, driven by his passion for the outdoors, started Lunatic Adventures Inc., a wilderness guiding company. Three years later, in an effort to live a more environmentally aware lifestyle, David moved his home and office from the busy city of Toronto to the quiet countryside of St. George. David built a Yurt, installed solar panels, a wind turbine, a composting toilet, and opened up his home as a model in sustainable living; thus evolved The LUNA Project. The interest generated by David’s alternative lifestyle soon leads to the construction of a multi-use classroom Yurt and the creation of an alternative learning center”.

We are planning to leave at 8:00 to allow time for the drive. Tour 9:30 to 12:30, then optional lunch at the local pub for those that are interested.

Cost per person is $35.00 for tour and snowshoeing. Lunch extra. Fee, payable (in cheque or cash) at time of sign up. Sign up form with Jackie.

Potato, Tuna and Spinach Salad

What You Need

500g / 1lb 2oz small new potatoes halved

2 tbsp pesto sauce

3 tbsp olive oil

2 tbsp white wine vinegar

Half a 225g bag washed and ready to use young leaf spinach

2 roasted red peppers from a jar, drained and cut into strips

2 x 185g cans of tuna (any kind will do), drained and flaked

What You Do

1 Cook The Potatoes Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Tip in the potatoes, bring back to the boil and cook for 15-20 minutes until tender.

2 Make The Dressing Whisk the pesto with the olive oil and white wine vinegar and season with salt and pepper.

3 Bring It All Together Drain the potatoes and, while they are still hot, tip then into a large bowl with the spinach, peppers and dressing. Toss everything together so the heat from the potatoes gently wilts the spinach and the dressing coats all the leaves. Now add the tuna and carefully toss again to keep the tuna in fairly large flakes. Pile on to plates and serve immediately.
